Humphreys Trophy won on Tie-breaker

Seven teams and 28 players fought over the first silverware of the 203/24 season in the Humphrey’s Trophy U1675. Mercia hosted the event and together with Halesowen had two teams in the Jamboree. Game of the match proved to be Michael Hoare (LIC) vs Barry Smith (MER). Barry fought back from a clear pawn down to almost win. A draw was finally agreed. With both Mercia A and a strong Lichfield finishing on 3.5 each and having identical results it came down to who had Black on one. Mercia were therefore awarded the title on the thinnest of margins.
