Derek was the heart and soul of Mercia Chess Club for four decades. In that time he both played as one of their best players and dedicated large amounts of his time to the running of the club. He was one of the strongest club players and first team Captain for most of his career. He reached his highest grade of 155 in 2010 and remained at this level until his recent illness.
