This template shows shortcuts (= redirects) to a template, like the box appearing at the right. {{Tsh}} is a shortcut to {{template shortcut}}.

Usage

Which to show?

Although the template can show up to ten aliases, editors are encouraged to choose well which ones to display. Even if many redirects exist, two or three at the most is almost always enough, and by keeping the number small, it facilitates remembering them, and the situation is kept well organized.

List others in the "aliases" section of the template documentation. Again, not all of them need to be listed; some shortcuts are there just for historical reasons, and others differ only in whitespaces or in capitalization. Such names are usually better to hide.

Place this template at the top of the template documentation page.

Optional parameters

This template has several optional parameters:

  • float – if set to "left", then the box will float to the left of the page, instead of the default float "right".
  • clear – if set to "right" (and float = right) the box will be pushed to the right margin of the page, and prevent it from nest to the left of other right floating elements. Similarly, if set to "left" (and float = left) the box will be pushed to the left margin of the page.
  • pre, pre2, pre3 ... up to pre10 – can be used to show some text before the shortcut links, but within the braces. This is mostly used to indicate that the template should be used with substitution.
  • top – to change the padding above the box (e.g. Template:Para for no padding, Template:Para, Template:ParaTemplate:\Template:Para, etc).

Examples

Basic

For one template shortcut named {{uw-v1}}:

Template:Tlc Template loop detected: Template:Template shortcut Template:Clear

To indicate that {{uw-vandalism1}} has three shortcuts named: {{uw-v1}}, {{uw-vand1}}, and {{uw-vandal1}}; then the following code may be used:

Template:Tlc Template loop detected: Template:Template shortcut Template:Clear

With additional parameters

Using Template:Para makes this template flow to the left of the page:

{{template shortcut|float=left|uw-v1}} Template loop detected: Template:Template shortcut Template:Clear

Using Template:Para and Template:Para will show "subst:" before the shortcut links, but within the braces. For example:

{{template shortcut|uw-v1|pre2=subst:|uw-vand1|pre3=subst:|uw-vandal1}} Template loop detected: Template:Template shortcut Template:Clear

Usage

Place this template near the top of articles that use the dd mmm yyyy date format; see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section for more information about the order of elements near the beginning of the article.

Wikipedia articles that use dd mmm yyyy dates, either because of the first main contributor rule or close national ties (see MOSNUM), are being systematically tagged with {{Use dmy dates}}. The template facilitates article maintenance by enabling bots to recognise use of this format and by adding the article to the hidden category Use dmy dates. The template is invisible except in edit mode.

Use of this template is part of a continuing effort to monitor the date formats used in articles, to assist in maintaining consistent formatting within an article. It is not a temporary "cleanup" template. Therefore, do not remove the template without valid reason, such as a determination the article uses or should use a different date format.

After being tagged, and bearing in mind article evolution, periodic script or bot runs clean up formats, correcting any new introductions since its last visit, and updating the visit date on the {{Use dmy dates}} template.

Due to there being some objection to totally unifying date formats within an article, the dmy and mdy templates have almost always been used to indicate date styles in the body of the articles; although it may also indicate the flavour of dates in reference sections or parts thereof. Therefore, this template notice ought to be read in conjunction with the blurb at Wikipedia:Date formattings. MOSNUM script documentation may also be relevant to those interested.

In general, the date format used for publication dates within references should match that used within the article body. However, it is common practice for archive and access dates to use the alternative ymd format. This usage is valid and is specifically mentioned at MOSDATE. In those cases, the archive and access date formats should not be altered when fixing dates.

Syntax

Template:Tlx

TemplateData

Template:TemplateDataHeader <TemplateData> {

       "description": "This template should be placed near the top of articles that use the dd mmm yyyy date format.",
       "params": {
               "date": {
                       "label": "Date",
                       "description": "The month and year that the article was last checked for inconsistent date formatting. Example: 'June 2013'; may use '{{subst:DATE}}' template instead",
                       "type": "string",
                       "required": false
               }
       }

} </TemplateData>

Wrongly tagged?

If, for example, you determine that an article has a template that is inappropriate for its nationality, you should substitute the template to avoid scripts or bots reapplying the "wrong" format in the course of maintenance.
